41: A Birthday, A Mirror, and A Promise to Myself

Birthdays
A day that arrives every year with calls, wishes, cakes, candles, and celebrations. Yet somehow, as we grow older, the excitement quietly starts fading away.
Yesterday, my daughter came to me and said, "Daddy, Happy Birthday pre-eve! But why don't you look excited?"
Her innocent question stayed with me.
I paused and asked myself: Has the spark gone after 40? Or has my inner child slowly fallen asleep?
Last year, when I turned 40, I had a realization. If the average human life is around 80 years, then my first innings is over, and my second innings has just begun.
And honestly, the first innings was not entirely mine.
It was a phase where I lacked confidence. I looked around for validation. Family, friends, and society made many decisions on my behalf, and I willingly followed them. I chose safe roads, ran in the rat race because everyone else was running, chased people, got attracted by appearances, lived for others, and often kept my own happiness on hold.
Somewhere along the way, I forgot to ask myself one simple question:
"What do I truly want? What genuinely brings me joy?"
One thing has become crystal clear to me:
Life is beautiful, and time is the most precious currency we possess. Once spent, it can never be earned back.
We all play multiple roles in life—son, husband, brother, father, friend, colleague.
But in fulfilling these responsibilities, we often forget the most important role:
Being ourselves.
We forget to nurture the individual behind all these titles.
And maybe that's what birthdays are really meant for.
Not just celebrations.
But reflections.
A reminder to pause, look inward, and ask:
What makes me happy?
What brings me peace?
What excites me like a child?
What have I been postponing in the name of responsibilities?
I know life is busy. Time is limited. Responsibilities are endless.
But I also believe that the people who truly love us want to see us happy. They want us to pursue the things that make our eyes sparkle.
So, this year, I am making a few promises to myself.
I will take solo trips and spend time talking to my soul.
I will write more—these blogs will now become a weekly conversation with all of you.
I will invest more in my health because a healthy body is the foundation of every dream.
I will sip coffee with my favourite books and allow myself to slow down.
I will meet new people, listen to new stories, and learn from different cultures.
And most importantly…
I will smile more. I will stay curious. I will stay excited. I will protect my inner child.
Because age should add wisdom, not steal wonder.
As I step into another year of life, I don't want to count the candles.
I want to count the moments that make me feel alive.
Here's to my second innings.
Here's to choosing myself a little more.
Here's to living, not merely existing.
And here's to all of you reading this—may you also find the courage to ask yourself:
"Am I living the life I truly want, or just the life I have become accustomed to?"
Maybe your next birthday can be your mirror too.
With love,
Talk2Nitin

"We forget to nurture the individual behind all these titles.
And maybe that's what birthdays are really meant for."-These lines make so much of sense to me. I am writing it out somewhere.🤪
